Assignment Spotlight: Online Game-Based Learning

Dec 06, 2022

It’s no secret that technology has taken over the world. With advancements in technology, comes new and innovative ways to learn. Game-based learning is one of those innovations.I have published multiple articles about some of the game-based teaching strategies I have used. As a bonus this month for your assignment spotlight, I'll be sharing links to each of them below.

What is game-based learning? Game-based learning (GBL) is a type of instruction that uses games to teach academic content or 21st century skills. It has been shown to be an effective way to engage students and help them retain information. In fact, studies have found that when students are engaged in the learning process, they are more likely to succeed academically. GBL also provides opportunities for students to practice problem solving and teamwork skills.

How can it be used in higher education? There are many different ways that GBL can be used in higher education. For example, it can be used as a tool for teaching difficult concepts or reinforcing classroom teachings. Additionally, it can be used as a method of assessment, as well as a way to promote student engagement and motivation. Additionally, instructors use game-based learning to allow students the opportunity to experiment with different strategies, build confidence in their abilities, and develop critical thinking skills.

Here are some examples of game-based assignments I have used in my online courses:

  1. Getting to Know You Bingo. The Teaching Professor, Retrieved from https://www.teachingprofessor.com/topics/classroom-climate/building-relationships/getting-to-know-you-bingo/
  2. The Blueprint Puzzle Tournament. Journal of Nursing Education, 61(2), 112-112. https://doi.org/10.3928/01484834-20211213-10
  3. How a Bill Becomes Law: A Health Policy Debate with a Twist. Journal of Nursing Education, 41, 8-18. https://doi.org/10.3928/01484834-20220404-04
  4. The Congressional Squares: A Game-Based Health Policy Activity. Journal of Nursing Education, 61(7), 421. https://doi.org/10.3928/01484834-20220613-09
  5. The Research is Right: Gamifying Nursing Research. Journal of Nursing Education, 61(10), https://doi.org/10.3928/01484834-20220803-02

In conclusion, game-based learning is a powerful tool that can be used to improve student engagement and achievement in higher education. By using GBL as part of the curriculum, instructors can help students learn new concepts more effectively and practice the skills they need to be successful in the future. Additionally, instructors can use GBL as an assessment tool and a way to promote student engagement and motivation. With all these benefits, game-based learning is definitely something that should be considered by any institution looking for new ways to improve their teaching methods.
