Assignment Spotlight: Health Policy Newsfeed

May 02, 2023

In today's blog post, I'll highlight a fun and easy assignment I use in my Health Policy course to help students stay abreast of the current trends and issues related to healthcare.

One trait I like to develop in my students is being knowledgeable about current events. In order to foster this, my students must submit a brief summary on a Health or Health Policy related news article each week. I provide them with an ongoing "Health Policy Newsfeed" and they select an article to report on each week. Here are the instructions:

Assignment

Select one topic from the Health Policy News Feed and summarize it. What were the key points. What is your opinion on this subject matter?

The student simply has to click on one of the scrolling articles that interests them to access it. This news feed is from a Google News aggregator that pulls Health and Health Policy related news from the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN. Students typically enjoy this activity and learn a lot from it.

You can learn more details of this assignment in the Journal of Nursing Education (Nurse-Clarke, 2021).
