Assignment Spotlight: Meme Match

Dec 01, 2020

For this month's assignment spotlight, I would like to highlight a fun assignment called Meme Match that was recently featured on BreakoutRN. I'm always looking for new and interesting ideas for assignments and this one is not only interesting but can be used in a variety of different ways! In this week's blog post, I'll share some different ways this interesting assignment can be used to liven up your online class!

Meme Match Assignment

The Meme Match Assignment is described by BreakoutRN as an activity used to connect content with relevant images. The images are memes that relate to the course content. The use of images in education has been identified as a strong teaching strategy and serves as an effective way to reinforce materials. In the example provided in The Meme Match Assignment, memes that reflect symptoms of a variety of autoimmune disorders are scattered about a class and students have to match that meme with a disease process.

Adapting this activity to the online classroom

This type of an activity can be used in a variety of different ways for an online setting:

  1. Student developed memes- students can be instructed to find a meme that reflects a concept reviewed in class that week. Students can then describe their meme and why they chose it. This can be used in a discussion board forum or even in a third party tool such as VoiceThread.
  2. Instructor developed memes: Similar to the Meme Match Assignment described above, you can use memes in your lecture or instruction to reinforce concepts. This can also include adding them into your lectures or creating an assessment that includes them.
  3. Course-themed meme: In many of my courses, I include a weekly quote that reflects the course material for that week. This could also be done through a meme that reflects the materials for that week.

These are just a few different ways you might be able to use memes to liven up your online classroom but I'd LOVE to hear your ideas of how you can effectively use memes in your courses.
