Assignment Spotlight: Retrieval Practice Activities

Aug 01, 2023

I have recently become more and more intrigued with the idea of using retrieval practice to reinforce concepts and ideas. In today's blog post, I'll share more about this practice and how it can be used in online nursing course effectively.

Retrieval practice is a type of learning strategy that involves actively recalling information from memory, rather than simply receiving and reviewing new information. By creating opportunities for retrieval practice, students are able to better retain the material they are exposed to, even over long periods of time.

I believe that this method can be incredibly beneficial when applied to online nursing because  it provides an easy way for students to practice and review the concepts they are learning. It also encourages them to look back on previous topics, which can help reinforce their understanding of the material more deeply.

By creating opportunities for retrieval practice within online nursing courses, educators can provide a more efficient and effective way for students to learn and retain information. One way of doing this is through the use of ungraded, self-paced quizzes. With these types of activities, students can test themselves on their knowledge, while getting immediate feedback. This allows them to quickly identify any areas of weakness and work towards strengthening them. In addition, by providing short assessments at the end of each lesson or unit, educators can ensure that students are actively engaging with the material and developing a deeper understanding.

Most Learning Management Systems (LMS) provide the tools to create such activities easily and quickly. Furthermore, many also offer the ability to provide instant feedback to students when they answer questions incorrectly. You can also use fun Ed Tech Tools that can make quizzes and tests more interesting and engaging for the students.

By utilizing quizzes, assessments, and Ed Tech Tools within your course content, you can create an effective learning experience that will help your students retain information better. Additionally, it will also give you more insight into your student’s progress by providing data on how well they are doing.

Ultimately, incorporating retrieval practice into online nursing courses can help ensure that students are engaging with the content and retaining important information. Not only will it help your students learn, but it will also provide you with valuable data regarding their learning progress.

I'd love to hear how you might use retrieval practice in your own online courses.
