Assignment Spotlight: Virtual Field Trip

Oct 03, 2023

In today's blog post I'll share some tips about how to use virtual field trip assignments in online nursing courses.

Virtual field trips are a great way to engage students in learning, while also providing them with a safe and interactive environment that is filled with enriching experiences. Virtual field trips can be used to explore historical sites, research new topics, or expand on concepts that are being discussed in class.

When planning a virtual field trip assignment, it’s important to think about the learning objectives that need to be met and how these objectives can be effectively met through virtual field trips. For nursing courses, this could include researching health challenges in certain regions, exploring medical technology developments in different areas, or understanding cultural differences related to healthcare practices.

For instance, in a health policy class, you might have students take a virtual field trip to Washington DC to explore the US Capitol and learn about the legislative process. For a medical research class, you might have students take a virtual field trip to a laboratory or hospital to observe current research processes.

No matter which objectives you choose for your virtual field trips, it’s important to ensure that students are engaged in critical thinking and actively participating in the learning experience. To do this, provide students with thought-provoking questions and tasks to complete while on the virtual field trip that challenge them to think deeply about the topics being discussed.

You can also have students work in small groups or teams and present their findings to the class as a way to reinforce what they learned during the virtual field trip.

I'd love to hear your ideas on how you might be able to use virtual field trip activities in your online courses.
