Ed Tech Tuesday: Bubbl.us

Jun 30, 2020
One of the members in The Online Educator Facebook Group mentioned the tool bubbl.us which is a mind-mapping tool that seemed like it could be a useful resource for students who require more visual explanations. I became interested in the tool because concept-mapping has been a big focus in nursing education over the past few years and the idea of mind-mapping seems to be synonymous with this method. I had been very slow to get on board with the idea of concept-mapping because they always seemed very confusing to me, but since my wonderful group member mentioned this tool, I decided to look into it more!

The idea behind mind-mapping is to provide a way to organize your ideas visually in a way that makes sense to you and others. This can be helpful to students who are learning a new concept that may have various constructs included in it that may then also be inter-related with other concepts. For instance, when I teach about the respiratory system, I have to make sure that my students understand that various other body systems are also inter-related and can affect the respiratory system such as the cardiac system. I won't get too technical other than to say that a visual map of how these two systems overlap and are inter-related can help make these points clearer.

There are lots of other ways mind maps can and have been used more generally. One of the most simple examples is a family tree. A family tree helps you to more easily see and understand relationships within a family unit. Also, algorithm's are types of mind maps that are used in an "if this, then that" method. There are many ways to make use of a mind-map and bubbl.us gives lots of examples of some that you can create.

If your course requires you to explain a lot of complicated concepts, this might be a really useful tool for you. Let us know in The Online Educator Facebook Group if you choose to use this tool... better yet, share a link to the mind map that you create!
