Ice-Breaker Tuesday: Picture Me

Nov 09, 2021

Picture Me is an ice-breaker activity where students are asked to describe themselves using 3-5 images. The goal is for their classmates to get a sense of who they are and what they like. It's also a great way for people to get to know each other, as it gives them an opportunity to share personal information without having too much pressure on one question. Learn more about this activity in today's blog post.

I love activities that ask students to create or share pictures. I believe that the old saying that a picture can tell a thousand words is true. When you see a picture, your mind automatically starts to imagine what's going on in that person's life and who they might be as a person. This activity allows students to think about their identity and create visual stories of themselves through the images they choose for this ice-breaker.

An added benefit of the activity is the creative freedom it allows. Students can include pictures of themselves or images from the internet. They can also include non-verbal images, like symbols of what they're passionate about. The possibilities are endless!

After students share the pictures with their classmates, I like to ask them follow up questions that will get more information out of them and encourage discussion. The tool VoiceThread is ideal for this as it allows for replies and "threaded" conversations.
