Ice-Breaker Tuesday: Quote of the Day

Apr 11, 2023

Motivational quotes have the power to turn a bad day around, inspire us to keep going, and remind us of our potential. That's why I love sharing quotes in my online courses. In today's blog post, I'll share a fun ice-breaker activity you can do with your students around motivational quotes.

When I began teaching online, I selected a motivational quote that was reflective of each course concept I taught and shared it during each Module. I found that to be a great way to inspire my students, and it also gave them something inspirational to relate the course work to. After doing this for quite some time, I decided to change things up a bit and ask the students to share their favorite motivational quote that reflected the course material being taught that week.

This is an excellent idea for any online course. You can do this in several ways. First, you can do it the way that I did and ask students to share a motivational quote that reflects the concepts being taught that week. Not only would this give your students an opportunity to get creative, but it also gives them the chance to connect with the content on a deeper level. You can then have them discuss their thoughts on why they chose each quote and how it reflects that week's content.

You can also do this as a general course ice-breaker and have students submit their favorite quotes. Then, you can pick one to highlight and share with the entire class each week as an opening announcement. This is a great way to begin each course week or Module, as it provides inspiration.

Another option is to ask students to create their own quotes or quote designs using a tool such as Canva or another program of their choice. This allows students a creative outlet and the chance to express themselves.

Here's an AWESOME example of how an amazing K-12 educator named Kristen May uses this activity with her students. This should also help spark some ideas for your own online course.

I'd love to hear your ideas on this ice-breaker. Share them in The Online Educator Facebook Group!
