Ice-Breaker Tuesday: Where in The World

ice-breaker Sep 14, 2021

In today's Ice-breaker assignment, I'll be sharing a fun one I learned about recently (and will be using in the upcoming semester) called "Where in the World". I'm really looking forward to trying it out and sharing more about it with you today!

So we all know that I LOVE a good ice-breaker (hence the monthly spotlight in this blog!), so when I learned about the"Where in the World" ice-breaker, I was excited to try it out in my online course. I think ice-breakers can add a lot to an online course and can help to build community in a way that really sets the foundation for learning and sharing.

In today's ice-breaker, called "Where in the World", students must give 3 clues about a country they or their family is from (other than the country they are presently in) or a country they love to visit or would love to visit. I really like this ice-breaker because I teach in a very diverse college where most students are from other countries. It's always fun hearing about where everyone is from and the similarities and differences that emerge.

Another great thing about this icebreaker is it encourages students to engage with each other and start a conversation. I also love that I will be able to role model and share my own select country. This is great because I haven't been able to travel as much as I typically would and many others have also not been able to travel due to the pandemic, so hopefully this will be enjoyable for everyone. It can be used in a traditional Discussion Board or a tool such as VoiceThread for an added audio/visual touch.

I'd love to hear your ideas on this ice-breaker. Share them in The Online Educator Facebook Group!
