Ice-breaker Tuesday: Would You Rather

Aug 09, 2022

Would You Rather activities have taken off in K-12 education and I think they can serve as very fun ice-breaker activities in online courses. I'll explain exactly what they are and give you tons of examples to use in your online class in today's blog post.

Would you rather activities are a great way to get to know your students and for them to get to know each other. They are also a fun way to break the ice in online courses. Would You Rather activities can be used as ice-breakers, getting-to-know-you activities, or simply as a fun way to pass the time.

Here's how they work:

You give your students two options to choose from. They can either choose option A or option B. There is no right or wrong answer, it's simply a way for students to share their preferences.

For example:

Would you rather go on a vacation to the beach or the mountains?

Would you rather listen to music or read a book?

Would you rather eat out at a restaurant or cook at home?

There are endless possibilities for would you rather questions, and they can be adapted to any topic or subject. You could even focus them on a particular subject or topic. For instance, in my RN-BS nursing course I might ask my students:

Would you rather work in a hospital or a nursing home?

Would you rather be a nurse practitioner or a clinical nurse specialist?

Would you rather work in pediatrics or geriatrics?

You could even use this activity to learn about your students' preferred learning style, for instance you might ask:

1. Would you rather have a discussion board activity or a VoiceThread activity?

2. Would you rather watch a video or read an article?

3. Would you rather work on a group project or an individual project?

If you want more examples of Would You Rather questions, here is a link to 150 Insanely Fun (and Head-Scratching) “Would You Rather” Questions in 2022.
