Radical Online Resource: Goblin Threat Game

Jun 28, 2022

This week's resource is a fun game that helps students test their knowledge of plagiarism and proper citations. As this is often an issue for my students, I have taken an extreme liking to this resource. Learn more about it on today's blog post.

Todays radical online resource is The Goblin Threat Game. It's a fun activity developed by Mary Broussard and Jessica Urick Oberlin from Lycoming College. It's an awesome way to teach college students about plagiarism and proper citation.

How to Play:

The objective of the game is catch all of the "plagiarism goblins" who are out to destroy the academic integrity of the college. Throughout the game, students enter different rooms on campus and must capture all the goblins in that room before moving to the next room. Students gain points and receive access to the next room by correctly identifying examples of plagiarism and proper citations. Students must click around in the room to find the goblins hiding in the various areas.

I like this resource as a fun way for students to test their knowledge about plagiarism and proper citations. While I always post reference material for them, I do not have time to provide detailed feedback about their errors in formatting and referencing. Having students engage in an activity such as the Goblin Threat game allows them to get immediate feedback about their errors and correct them on the spot.

The great thing about this game is that is fully asynchronous and students can play it over and over again. Also, the game includes fun background noises and exciting sound effects that help keep students engaged.

If you are looking for a fun way to teach your students about plagiarism and proper citation, I highly recommend the Goblin Threat game!
