As an online educator, the start of a new year can be both exciting and overwhelming. That's because the start of a new year, usually means the start of a new semester is not very far behind. And the start of a new semester, means it's time to begin thinking about course prep. There is so much to consider when prepping your course for the next semester, but it’s important to take time out to do it right.

From creating engaging content that meets student expectations, to staying on top of industry trends in order to remain relevant, there are plenty of tasks that need attention if you want your course to be successful.

By taking the time now to plan ahead and give yourself ample preparation for the upcoming semester, you can set yourself up for success during what could otherwise be a stressful and chaotic period. In this blog post I will discuss why it's essential for online educators start off 2023 by prepping their course in advance.

There is one sure way to set yourself up for successful course delivery in the coming year and that’s to plan ahead. That means spending time now thinking about how you want to lay out your course, what types of activities you will include, and how you will assess student learning. Taking the time to think through these things now can save you a lot of stress down the line when you are trying to come up with ideas on the fly.

Prepping your course in advance has multiple benefits. Here are just a few:

  1. Planning ahead gives you the opportunity to think through the structure of your course, which can ensure that your course is engaging and in line with educational objectives and standards. This includes setting up appropriate onboarding for students, organizing course content into digestible segments, and creating assignments that align with the course objectives.
  2. Prepping your course in advance gives you time to develop appropriate course activities and assignments. This could include creating interactive activities for students to engage in, incorporating multimedia into lectures, or revising outdated material. Course content is the backbone of your course and you want to be sure that your course is providing students with the most up to date and relevant information. This includes the text or other educational resources you will be using. This also includes the time it may take to develop assignments that can effectively measure student’s understanding and progress in the course material.
  3. Taking the time to plan ahead can also help you stay on top of industry trends and changes in the field. This could include adopting new technologies, creating new content to reflect changes, or incorporating relevant topics into lectures. When adopting new technologies, there is often a learning curve for students as well as instructors. Taking additional time to become familiar with the technology before implementing it into your course can save you time and frustration later on. Additionally, taking the time to ensure that any new content or topics reflect changes in the field will help ensure that your students are getting accurate information and staying up-to-date with relevant topics.
  4. Prepping your course in advance can save you time and energy as well as increase student engagement. This can allow you to focus more on providing quality feedback, making stronger connections with students, and creating meaningful learning experiences. Much of the time and energy spent on course prep throughout the semester can be avoided if you plan ahead and have your course prepared prior to the start of the semester. Additionally, by taking the time to create engaging activities and assignments students are more likely to stay engaged in their learning and will be better equipped to understand and retain what they learn in your course. Imagine spending time just getting to know your students and learning what motivates them instead of spending all your time trying to play catch up.
  5. Finally, prepping your course in advance can help to reduce stress and chaos during the semester by providing a foundation that you can build on as the semester progresses. This can give you more time to focus on other important tasks such as grading, student support, and course updates. Once the semester begins, time just seems to fly by! Before you know it, the semester is half way over and you may not have had a chance to get everything done that you had wanted. Taking the time during summer or winter break to plan ahead can help reduce stress throughout your semester by giving you more time to attend to other responsibilities while still providing quality instruction and learning experiences for your students.

By taking the time to plan ahead and give yourself ample preparation for the upcoming semester, you can ensure that your online course is successful and set yourself up for a successful 2023.
